More Than a Marathon
Dear Friends & Family,
As you may or may not know, in a little less than a month I will be running the Air Force Marathon in Dayton, Ohio. This is my first marathon, and I have been training for several months now. However, instead of doing this marathon for myself, I wanted to dedicate these 26.2 miles (and likely many more to come) to another cause.
I believe that a worldview bound by borders is outdated and that stopping injustice anywhere is the responsibility of humanity everywhere. Because of these views, I am committed to ending the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) conflict, a 27 year-long civil war in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, and South Sudan. Joseph Kony, the leader of LRA, is indicted by the International Criminal Court for committing some of the most serious crimes against humanity in the twenty-first century: abducting over 30,000 children into his rebel army, forcing girls into sex slavery, and displacing millions of people from their homes. Due to increased global awareness and efforts to stop him, Kony and the LRA are weaker than ever, with only an estimated 300 fighters. However, 140 women and 72 children are still being held captive by Kony’s forces.
I recently attended the Fourth Estate Leadership Summit hosted by Invisible Children, a nonprofit organization aimed at ending the LRA conflict. Pulling together students, educators, and organizers, the conference offered keynote addresses and presentations to shape the future of human rights and international justice. After being inspired by the stories of numerous incredible people, I have decided that I am done with settling for results that are “good enough.” By overcoming the fear of failure, I’m expanding my full potential as an activist and, more importantly, as a global citizen. I am determined to raise $2,500 for Invisible Children’s ZeroLRA campaign. I will direct all money raised to the Invisible Children ZeroLRA campaign. If you do choose to make a donation, I can ensure you it will make a huge difference. Already, Invisible Children’s defection strategies, like broadcasting “come home” messages via radio networks and flyers, have ushered in enormous results: 93% decrease in LRA killings and 54 escapees from the LRA army in 2013 alone. We are so close to ending this war, but close is not good enough. I am by no means a distance runner, but I am totally committed to running, walking or crawling across the finish line to finish the job I have started. Thank you so much for supporting me in my effort to make this more than a marathon. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
